Theatre in the Grove is excited to announce auditions for 9 to 5: The Musical

  • Music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick
  • Directed by Chris Byrne.
  • Music and Vocal Direction by Alicia Barrett
  • Choreography by Bethany Hanson.

December 18, 19, 20

6-9 pm by appointment only.

Callbacks at discretion of the director.

All roles are volunteer.

All cast and crew members will undergo a background check. 

Rehearsals will begin Feb 12th.

Performances will be April 19- May 5,  2024 with shows on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees.

Please prepare 32-bars of a song in the style of the show. Please bring your backing track on a device such as a phone or tablet or sheet music for our accompanist.  Cold readings from sides will be provided during the audition.

INCLUSIVE CASTING

The creative team is committed to casting practices that advance diversity and inclusion. All ethnicities, genders, and abilities will be considered for every role. Additionally, the genders listed in the breakdown below are specific to the pronouns used in the script, however the creative team may consider any gender identity for roles provided the performer can execute the vocal requirements. Actors below the age of 18 will be considered at the discretion of the director.

9 to 5: The Musical, nominated for four Tony and 15 Drama Desk Awards, based on the hit 1980 movie, features a vibrant Dolly Parton score, and tells the uplifting story of working women pushed to the boiling point standing up for themselves against the male-dominated management, and winning!

Character Breakdown

Violet: The company’s Head Secretary and Mr. Hart’s Administrative Assistant, she is a single mother and typically stands up for what she believes in. Attractive, strong, ambitious.

Doralee: A young, sexy spitfire who works at Mr. Hart’s office. She is proof that there is more to a woman than just her looks. Clearly inspired by Dolly Parton in look and voice, both speaking and singing.

Judy: The “new girl” at the firm, she has been burned by her husband’s affair and is searching for personal empowerment. Insecure but determined and hopeful.

Franklin Hart, Jr.: One of the firm’s executives and a notorious chauvinist. He is capable of faking charm but usually shows his true colors as an arrogant, self-absorbed boss.

Roz Keith: The attentive office gossip queen and snitch. She has an unrequited love for Mr. Hart and will do anything she can to win his approval.

Joe: A handsome, young office accountant. Genuine and nice, and smitten with Violet.

Missy: Franklin Hart’s wife, clueless to her husband’s true nature.

Dick: Judy’s soon-to-be ex-husband. An average guy, he is sporting a little less hair and a little more paunch than he did ten years ago.

Kathy: A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to gossip.

Margaret: A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to drink.

Tinsworthy: Franklin Hart’s boss and Chairman of the Board. A good man, who may be wiser to Hart’s ways than he lets on.
