Westside Theatre Review said Jesus Christ Superstar will “convert newcomers into fans.” Get your tickets now – there’s just one weekend left to catch the Groundbreaking Rock Musical! And as an added incentive Ken Centers will be filling in for the role of Herod (May 6 & 7). Dan Bahr, who was cast as Herod has been given a very prestigious award from his work. This will be Ken’s first time onstage in five years.
March 20th, 2017 (Forest Grove) – Theatre in the Grove is excited to bring the groundbreaking rock opera to Forest Grove! “In 1971, at age 11, my parents gave me an LP (remember those?) they had received from a mail order record club”, says Ken Centers, director. “I put it on my small child’s turntable and thus began my love of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.”
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR takes place during the last seven days in the life of Jesus Christ. As His radical teachings are embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in ultimate betrayal. Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beautiful mix of rock and classical music, and Tim Rice’s dramatic lyrics, touched something deep within me,” says Centers, “I listened to that album all the way through, every day, for six months. It was the first musical I learned all the words to.” Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.
“That recording of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR made me want to get involved in the performing arts. I can’t express how thrilled I was when Theatre in the Grove chose me to direct. It’s without a doubt, my number one dream show to direct. Our cast is incredibly talented and has as much passion for this show as I do.
